Bicycling Maps for Europe

This section attempts to summarize some of the available map and route sources for Europe. These sources include mainly state and local governments, bicycle clubs, and non-profit cycling organizations.

The maps and route information here does not include commercial sites. Consequently, the cost for this information is free or minimum. We believe that there is a wealth of free information for bicycle touring in Europe. You just need to know where to get it. One nice thing about bicycle tourists is that they like to share favorite route information.

One of the recent improvements for obtaining maps have been portable GPS systems for bicycles. These GPS systems have become common amongst long-distance bicyclist and some clubs. As a result, more free downloads for bicycling routes have become available. One of the best places to get these free GPS information is from internet blogs and bicycle clubs. We are aggressively searching for these free downloads and we will make the links available when we find them.

Austria

  • Austria Cycling Maps, Freytag & Berndt: Scale 1:125,000 (1cm: 1.25km). New 2007. Set of 6 accordian-fold strip maps of the major bicycle trails with brief description, hotels, bike shops, etc.
  • Danube Cycling Guide, Volumes 1, 2, 3, & 4: Scale 1:50,000 and 1:75,000 (1cm: .5km and 1cm: .75km). Follows the famous bike route through Germany, Austria, and Hungary. Volume 2 covers the Austrian section and is in English.

  • North Sea Cycle Route Guide: Scale 1:75,000 (1 cm: .75km). Spiral bound, 112 pages in English. Includes regional and city maps. Covers from western coast of Denmark from Tender in the southwest to Skagen at the northern tip of Denmark.

  • Michelin Regional Series France: Scale 1:250,000 to 1:300,000 (1cm: 2.5km to 3km). The most respected bicycling maps for France. This new series is on regional/provincial basis. Includes some tourist information. In French.
  • Institut Geographique National, Top 100 Series: Scale 1:100,00 (1cm: 1km) A wide variety of maps for France, including topographical, recreational and road maps, as well as extensive city maps and town plans.

Germany
  • Copenhagen to Berlin: Online maps and descriptions of the international Copenhagen to Berlin cycle route.
  • Germany Tourism: Interactive maps of bicycling routes in Germany. In English and German.
  • Bicycle Germany: This is a private site, but it has a lot of bicycle routes in German.
  • Bikely: Online maps for mountain biking and bicycle routes inputed by readers. Search by country and region.

  • Danube Cycling Guide, Volumes 1, 2, 3, & 4: Scale 1:50,000 and 1:75,000 (1cm: .5km and 1cm: .75km). Follows the famous bike route through Germany, Austria, and Hungary. Volume 1 cover the German route and is in German.
  • Germany Bicycle Touring Route Maps by Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club: Scale 1:150,000 (1 cm: 1.5km). Revised 2007. 27 Sheets with information in German.

  • Touring Club Italiano, scale 1:200.000 (Grande carta stradale d'Italia), 15 sheets cover all of Italy: Scale 1:200,000 (1 cm: 2km). These are auto maps but show steep hills, distance, and other tourist information. In Italian.

  • Michelin Series Spain and Portugal, 7 maps: Scale 1:400,000 (1 cm: 4km). Not very detailed, but the maps show paved roads outside of major towns, government-owned hotels, camping sites, lodgings, distances and places of interest. Legend in English, French, Spanish and Portugese.

Twenty maps: They convey all the important information cyclists want before and during a trip: gradients, altitude differences, road surfaces, and traffic volume. Cantonal and national bicycling paths and mountain bike trails are specifically marked. In German with multilingual legend. (The regional cycling series is being revised, with new sheet numbers, so there are two different numbering systems depending on if the sheet is available in the new or old series.)
